PRIOR TO JOINING THE IBEW LOCAL 278 APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM IN 2009, I WORKED AS AN UNINDENTURED APPRENTICE IN THE LOCAL 60 APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM IN SAN ANTONIO, TX. AT THAT TIME, THERE WAS A LONG WAITING LIST, AND ONLY A LIMITED NUMBER OF APPLICANTS WERE ACCEPTED EACH YEAR.
AFTER MOVING BACK TO CORPUS CHRISTI AND COMPLETING THE GULF COAST APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM IN 2013, I BECAME ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN SERVING OUR LOCAL UNION IN SEVERAL ROLES, INCLUDING:
· JOB STEWARD
· LOCAL UNION VICE PRESIDENT
· EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBER
· LOCAL UNION FIELD ORGANIZER
· JATC APPRENTICE INSTRUCTOR
· FOREMAN DEVELOPMENT SERIES INSTRUCTOR
· NFPA 70E INSTRUCTOR
· MEMBER OF THE CORPUS CHRISTI ELECTRICAL ADVISORY BOARD
· DELEGATE TO THE IBEW 40TH INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION
I CURRENTLY SERVE AS YOUR BUSINESS MANAGER/FINANCIAL SECRETARY.
I AM HAPPILY MARRIED TO MY WONDERFUL WIFE, ISABEL CARRANCO, AND TOGETHER WE HAVE FOUR CHILDREN, AGES 13, 11, 7, AND OUR 9-MONTH-OLD BABY BOY.
SERVING AS BUSINESS MANAGER HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF MY LIFE, AND I AM PROUD OF THE PROGRESS WE HAVE MADE TO STRENGTHEN OUR UNION. AMONG OUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE:
· SUCCESSFUL CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS, RESULTING IN AN 11% WAGE INCREASE OVER TWO YEARS AND THE ADDITION OF FOUR PAID HOLIDAYS, GUARANTEED TO FALL ON WEEKDAYS EVERY YEAR.
· IMPROVING APPRENTICE TRAINING BY IMPLEMENTING CRAFT CERTIFICATION/PERFORMANCE-BASED EVALUATIONS TO BETTER PREPARE OUR FUTURE JOURNEYMEN ELECTRICIANS.
· TRANSITIONING FROM A FIVE-YEAR TO A FOUR-YEAR APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM, ALLOWING FOR A HIGHER WAGE STRUCTURE, INCLUDING A 5% INCREASE PER PERIOD AND A 10% INCREASE FROM 3RD TO 4TH PERIOD.
· BUILDING AN INCREDIBLE TEAM OF STAFF MEMBERS WHO ARE COMMITTED TO SERVING OUR UNION.
WHEN I’M NOT WORKING FOR YOU, I ENJOY LIVE MUSIC, A COLD BEER, AND SPENDING QUALITY TIME WITH MY FAMILY.
